Taking advantage of an offer from Plymouth University electron microscopy department we have been sampling various species of timber. We have available detailed images of ash, thermally modified ash, Douglas fir and Western red cedar at various magnification down to 50 microns. The process has been amazing and instructive to watch. To get good results the delicacy of cutting the samples and the technology of imaging them is both craft and engineering in one neat package. We hope to do a lot more of this kind of work and find applications that advance our microscopic understanding of timber.
